How is training at a Christian school different and why is it important?
Many arts use a ranking system of different colored belts. Don't
put too much stock in rankings, or belt color though, as they are HIGHLY dependent
on the art, school, and instructor. Some arts don't have any belts, while others
may have an entire rainbow of colors. The same color often signifies different ranks,
in different systems. Rather than rank or belt color, what should determine an individual's
skill is how long and how intensely they have studied, the quality of instruction
they have received, and their ability. For any school you might be considering,
find out how many ranks they have between white belt and black belt. Some schools
add extra ranks and/or tips in between to increase the number of test fees they
can charge.
The Academy of Fighting Arts uses a fairly
typical belt ranking system. We do use extra ranks in our children's programs, but
only as a means to help them learn more quickly, and to be successful.
We reduce the test fee in the kids ranks, so the extra ranks are truly used as a
motivational tool. Though belt rank is by no means a guarantee of martial
arts ability, we believe each rank is a stair-step on the training journey in the
martial arts. Our belt color system is listed below. NOTE: In the kids program,
the "high" level belt is the previous belt color, with a stripe running
longways signifying the next belt rank. For example, high yellow would be
a yellow belt with an orange stripe running longways.
White belt
High White (kids program only)
Yellow belt
High Yellow (kids program only)
Orange belt
High Orange (kids program only)
Green belt
High Green (kids program only)
Blue belt
High Blue (kids program only)
3rd Red belt
2nd Red belt
1st Red belt
1st Degree Black Belt, 2nd Degree Black Belt, etc.
