Classes are designed to push participants to their limits, in order to draw out the very best in each student. The focus is on precision & grace, effectiveness of technique, and realistic self-defense.
In Intro, new students will have class two nights each week. Once they move into the ongoing class, they will have the opportunity to attend a third class night each week (at no additional charge). The classroom training incorporates the following elements:
BASIC TECHNIQUES
Performing the kicks, hand strikes, and blocks while moving up and down the floor provides the repetitions necessary to gain proficiency with the techniques, as well as getting a great cardiovascular workout.
FORMS
Similar to dance routines or gymnastic floor exercises, the forms are pre-arranged imaginary fight scenes practiced to reach a level of both grace and power with the basic techniques.
SELF DEFENSE
A no-nonsense approach to self-defense with a wide variety of techniques for virtually any situation. Practice is the key to being able to use these techniques automatically.
SPARRING
The practical application of the basic techniques in a spontaneous situation. Control is stressed, and the students are never introduced to sparring before they are ready. This produces self-confidence, resulting in a relaxed, more effective fighter.
NOTE: Some of the basic martial arts concepts we teach are respect for those in positions of authority, discipline, and self-control. This is reinforced to the students through a set of classroom rules, which students are expected to learn and follow. Once the students understand the rules, and begin to apply the concepts without being told, we find they tend to do exceptionally well in other areas such as academics, work, and other organized sports as well.
One of the main advantages of the martial arts over group sports is that the student progresses based upon their individual improvement, and not by comparison to others. Students will advance at the instructors' recommendation, and at their own pace.
Over time, as the student progresses, they will have more material (basic techniques, forms, self-defense) that they are responsible for. In order to allow time to cover all the material, the class times will gradually increase with each rank. Beginner classes last around one hour, while advanced students' classes may last up to two hours.
